Reddit plans to make you log in to read it
Reddit will start testing a logged-in-only site outside the US this quarter, after a sharp drop in search traffic. What changes for readers and businesses.

If you add “reddit” to the end of your Google searches to find real answers from real people, that habit may soon need an account. Reddit plans to make most of the site readable only once you log in.
Reddit announced the change in its third-quarter letter to shareholders on 29 October. “A key piece of work to retain new audiences is shifting Reddit to a logged-in-only experience,” the letter says.
Tests start this quarter, but not in the US
Reddit says it will begin “fully testing” the change in select markets outside the US in the fourth quarter of 2026. That means some time before the end of December. The results will shape a version of logged-in-only Reddit for the whole world.
Reddit hasn’t said which countries will be first. Australia isn’t named, so it may or may not be in the first group. There’s no date yet for a global switch.
On the earnings call, CEO Steve Huffman was blunt. “This is a test, but we are going to make this transition,” he said, according to Investing.com’s transcript.
What you’ll still see without an account
That part isn’t settled. Huffman said on the call that Reddit needs “to find the right boundary to provide value to the user”. Reddit wants people who visit reddit.com to “get a taste of Reddit”, and wants link-sharing and post-sharing to keep working.
So a thread a friend sends you should still open. What happens when you click through to the next thread, or arrive from Google, is the detail the tests are meant to work out. Engadget reports Huffman said the company is still deciding when a “hard prompt” to log in will appear.
In a post on his Reddit profile, PPC Land reports, Huffman wrote that logging in won’t require your name or identity. The shareholder letter also mentions “an improved incognito mode in the app”, but doesn’t say how it will work.
Search traffic is falling
The backdrop is search traffic. Reddit says its search referral traffic was “down meaningfully” in the third quarter, with the decline speeding up late in the quarter. In October, search traffic has dropped by more than 1 million referrals a week on average.
Huffman put the blame on Google’s AI features. “The reality is the AI Mode does not drive traffic. Not for us, and not to anybody as far as I know,” he said on the call. Reddit is still a top search term on Google, in his words, but “Google is not sending them to Reddit the way they used to”.
Our explainer on AI Overviews and your website covers why fewer people may click through when Google answers the question itself. Google is now also putting ads inside AI Mode answers in Australia.
Reddit warned that if October’s decline continues, its daily users could fall by a low-double-digit percentage in the fourth quarter.
Most readers are logged out, but most money comes from logged-in users
Reddit averaged 130.3 million daily users in the quarter. Of those, 76.8 million were logged out and 53.5 million were logged in. Outside the US, logged-out daily users grew 33% to 49.5 million.
Logged-in users are worth far more to Reddit. “Over 80% of our revenue comes from logged in users,” Huffman told analysts. The letter says an account gives Reddit “more signals for ads targeting” and helps people find the communities most relevant to them.
Huffman admitted the trade-off: “We’ll likely be trading reach for engagement.”
What it means for you
For everyday readers, the main cost is friction and data. Reading while logged in means Reddit can link what you read to your account and use it to target ads. If you’re happy with that, an account takes a minute. If you’re not, you’ll need to decide how much Reddit browsing is worth it.
For businesses and marketers, two things could change. People find threads that mention your business, product or industry through Google, and many of them read logged out. If some of those readers hit a login wall and leave, fewer of them will see those recommendations or follow links back to your site.
Reddit advertisers sit on the other side. Reddit’s argument is that logged-in users carry better targeting signals, which is where its ad products already make most of their money. How many logged-out readers will sign up rather than leave is unknown. On the conversion rate over time, Huffman said, “we just do not know”.
None of this changes anything today. But if Reddit threads are part of how customers find you, now is a good time to measure how much.
Checklist
- Check Reddit referrals in your analytics. In Google Analytics or your site’s stats, look at visits from reddit.com over recent months so you have a baseline before any login tests reach Australia.
- Search Reddit for your business name. Note which threads mention you or your products, since logged-out visitors from Google may find them harder to read once tests begin.
- Don’t plan on Google sending people to Reddit threads. Reddit says its search referrals dropped by more than 1 million a week on average in October, and Huffman blames Google’s AI Mode.
- Check your Reddit privacy settings. Once you’re logged in, Reddit uses your activity for ad targeting, so review the ad personalisation options in your account settings.
