YouTube will now freeze channels it suspects are hacked

YouTube now pauses uploads, live streams and thumbnails on channels showing unusual activity, usually for up to 24 hours, while it checks for a hijack.

If YouTube thinks someone has broken into your channel, it will now lock the controls to limit the damage. Uploads, live streams and thumbnail changes freeze while YouTube’s security team checks what’s going on.

YouTube announced the change in a TeamYouTube community post and a help article. The pause switches on automatically when YouTube detects “unusual or unauthorized activity” on a channel.

Hijackers move fast, so YouTube moves first

The post explains the thinking. When a channel is hijacked, hackers try to lock the owner out quickly and upload unwanted videos or live streams.

The pause takes those tools away. While it’s in place, no one can:

  • upload or update videos and Shorts
  • switch videos from private to unlisted or public
  • start a live stream
  • create playlists or add videos to them
  • upload custom thumbnails.

That “no one” includes you and anyone else who manages the channel. You’ll see a banner in YouTube Studio or the YouTube app saying channel changes are restricted. If anyone tries a blocked feature, they’ll get an error message.

Your channel stays online

The channel itself doesn’t go dark. It stays online and your existing videos stay public. The community post adds that viewers can keep watching and interacting, and that your monetisation status won’t be affected.

There’s one catch. The help article says YouTube may set some of your recent videos to private during the review, to protect viewers. It doesn’t say which ones or how many.

Usually sorted within 24 hours

YouTube’s review typically finishes within 24 hours, and you don’t need to take immediate action while it runs. Watch the channel owner’s email account for updates.

There are two possible outcomes:

  • No sign of a break-in. YouTube lifts the limits immediately and restores every feature.
  • Hijack confirmed. The limits stay in place. YouTube emails instructions to re-secure your Google account, undo any unauthorised changes, and contact its support team to lift the restrictions.

Prevention still matters most

YouTube’s own advice hasn’t changed: turn on 2-Step Verification and use strong passwords. Neither the post nor the help article says which signals trigger a pause, or how long a confirmed hijack can take to clear. The pause is a safety net, not a lock on the door.

If your channel matters to your business, plan for the pause too. While it’s in place, you can’t start a live stream or upload until it’s lifted.

Our guide to setting up two-factor authentication across your business accounts covers Google Workspace and personal Google accounts. If the worst happens, our first-hour plan for a hacked business email applies to the Google account behind your channel too.

Checklist

  • Turn on 2-Step Verification. Do it on the Google account that owns your YouTube channel, and on every account that manages it.
  • Use a strong, unique password. Change the channel owner’s Google account password if it’s reused anywhere else.
  • Check the owner email is one you read. YouTube sends security review updates to the channel owner’s email account.
  • Wait for the review if a pause banner appears. YouTube says no immediate action is needed, and the review typically finishes within 24 hours.
  • Check your recent videos after a review. YouTube may set some recent videos to private during a pause. Make sure the right ones are public again.
  • Follow YouTube’s email steps if a hijack is confirmed. Re-secure the Google account, undo unauthorised changes, then contact YouTube support to lift the restrictions.
