How we report

What readers can expect from every Digital Advisors story, and what we expect of ourselves.

What we're for

Digital Advisors reports the platform, software and rule changes that affect how Australian small businesses find, win and serve customers. Every story should tell a reader what changed, whether it affects them, and what to do about it.

How we choose stories

We cover a change when it directly affects Australian small businesses: their costs, obligations, tools, customers or security. We ask whether we can add something the original announcement doesn't: context, a checklist or a clear explanation of who is affected. We don't publish press releases as news.

Sourcing

News, alerts and explainers are built on primary sources: the regulator, government agency, court or company that made the announcement. Those sources are listed at the end of each story. Trade press and vendor explainers can help us find and corroborate a story, but they never carry a claim on their own.

We say whether something is law, a proposal or our own reading. When we work something out that a source doesn't state, such as a date, we say so and explain how.

Checking

Before publication, every story is checked claim by claim against its sources, separately from the drafting. Errors are fixed and unsupported claims are removed or qualified. Stories are approved for publication by the publisher.

Use of AI

We use AI tools to help research, draft and check stories. AI output is never treated as a source: every fact must trace to a primary source listed with the story, and each story is checked against those sources before it is published. Each story says how it was made.

Examples and images

Product images are real: official press images supplied by the maker, our own photos, or screenshots we take ourselves, each credited under the image. We never use AI-generated images of products or photos copied from retailers.

Examples in guides are labelled as illustrative. We don't present invented client results, experiences or statistics as evidence. Some illustrations are AI-generated and some photographs are licensed stock; neither depicts real clients or verifies a result. Section artwork is decorative.

Reviews and buying guides

We only call something a review when we have used the product ourselves, and we say what we tested, for how long and on what. Research-based comparisons are labelled as buying guides, not reviews. We don't accept payment for coverage or let advertisers or affiliate partners see stories before publication.

Corrections and updates

If we get something wrong, we correct it clearly, note the correction on the story and record it on our corrections page. When a story changes substantially, we show the update date. Tell us about an error with the story title and the point we should check.

Independence and commercial relationships

Digital Advisors shares ownership with A1 Local, AdPages, SMB Sites, AfterClick and SkillBuild AI. Where a story mentions one of those businesses, we disclose the connection in the story. Advertising for them is labelled "Advertisement" and carries the same disclosure.

Sponsored content will always be labelled "Sponsored". Affiliate links, where we use them, are disclosed on the page and marked for search engines; we may earn a commission, and that never decides what we recommend. We don't sell links that pass ranking credit. See advertising for our advertising rules.

How we make money

Digital Advisors is free to read. It is funded by advertising, which is always labelled, including advertising for businesses that share our ownership; by sponsored content, which is always labelled "Sponsored"; and by affiliate commissions. When a review or buying guide contains affiliate links, the page says so at the top, and those links are marked for search engines. We may earn a commission if you buy through them, at no extra cost to you. Commissions don't decide which products we cover, how we score them or what we recommend.
