X Premium is now part of a five-tier plan with Grok and Cursor
X Premium has been folded into The X Subscription with Grok and Cursor, from $8 a month. Existing plans continue, but switching is permanent.

X Premium is being withdrawn from sale as a standalone plan for new customers. In an announcement dated 12 October, SpaceXSI, the brand behind the Grok chatbot, said X Premium, Grok and the coding tool Cursor now sit in one plan called The X Subscription. It is open to new customers now and will reach “everyone globally” over the next few days.
If you pay for a checkmark or an ad-free timeline on X, nothing changes today. The decision in front of you is whether to switch, and that decision is permanent.
The five tiers
The pricing page and help pages list these plans:
| Plan | Monthly | Annual | What you get on X | AI usage in Grok and Cursor |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Free | $0 | $0 | Post, reply and follow | Limited |
| Plus | $8 | $80 | Checkmark, creator tools, fewer ads | Base amount |
| Premium | $30 | $300 | Ad-free scrolling on “most surfaces”, preferred handle, higher reply boost | 4 times Plus |
| Super | $100 | $1,000 | Same as Premium | 15 times Plus |
| Ultra | $200 | $2,000 | Same as Premium | 50 times Plus |
The comparison table on the pricing page puts editing posts, longer posts, Articles, Media Studio, analytics and the creator payment features at Plus and above. The Free plan has none of them.
That matters because the announcement says the previous plans “are no longer available for new sign-ups”. The old line-up, still described on X’s help page for people who already subscribe, started with a Basic tier that offered editing and longer posts without a checkmark. On the new list, the cheapest paid option is Plus.
What it costs in Australia
X’s help page still carries the old country price table. For Australia, on the web, it lists Basic at A$4.88 a month, Premium at A$13 a month or A$135 a year, and Premium+ at A$62 a month or A$621 a year, all before any tax.
The new prices have no such table. When we opened it in Perth on 13 October, the pricing page showed the monthly amounts in the table without naming a currency, and said they “do not include applicable taxes or fees”. The help page’s annual prices name no currency either. On our reading they are US dollars: the $8 Plus price matches the US$8 that the old table lists for Premium in the United States, where the Australian figure is A$13.
The X Subscription account said on X that for existing Premium and Premium+ subscribers, “your comparable plan on The X Subscription costs the same or less”. We could not see an Australian checkout to test that. The announcement also says switching comes with limited-time offers shown in billing settings, so the amount offered to you may differ from the list price. Compare the currency, tax and total with your current charge.
Switching is optional and permanent
According to the announcement and the help page for X Premium customers:
- You can stay put. Your plan, price and features continue until you change or cancel. Annual plans run to the end of their term. The company says it will eventually move remaining customers to the new plans, with no timeline yet and advance notice first.
- The switch can’t be reversed. The eligibility page says it is permanent and that support can’t undo it.
- Premium+ maps to Premium, not Plus. Plus gives a checkmark, creator tools and fewer ads. Full Premium+ benefits need Premium or higher.
- You pay first and get the refund separately. Switching cancels your X Premium subscription and refunds the unused time, but the refund “isn’t subtracted from what you pay at checkout”.
- App store purchases work differently. If you bought through Apple, Apple decides the refund. If Apple declines, the old subscription doesn’t renew and runs until the end of the period you paid for. If you bought through Google Play, check your subscriptions afterwards and cancel there if it still shows as renewing. The switching guide says gifted X Premium and Apple Family Sharing subscriptions are not cancelled or refunded.
- Business-managed accounts are excluded. Only personal X accounts can be connected. Accounts managed by an organisation, including affiliate accounts, can’t. The announcement doesn’t mention X’s separate Premium Business and Premium Organizations plans.
The option appears in your subscription settings on X when it reaches your account. If you also pay for Cursor, the help page says to start from Cursor instead, because starting from X doesn’t include it.
The AI allowance
Each paid plan comes with one pool of Grok usage, shared across the Grok apps, the Grok tab on X and Cursor. The pool refreshes weekly. The usage page says that once it runs out, further use is paid for from top-up credits, controlled by Auto Top-up and spending caps in your account.
Cursor users should note one change. Other companies’ AI models are available in Cursor only on Premium and above, and are billed separately at list prices. Existing Cursor plans keep their included allowance for those models until they switch.
Team plans use the Premium, Super and Ultra tiers at the same price per seat. Plus isn’t sold to teams. If you are weighing this against other AI subscriptions, our comparison of ChatGPT, Copilot and Gemini business plans covers the same currency and usage-charge questions.
If you only use X for the checkmark, there is no deadline to switch. The company says its switching offers are limited-time, so when the option appears, compare what you are offered with what you pay now.
Checklist
- Write down what you pay now. In your X subscription settings, or your Apple or Google Play subscriptions, note the plan, price, currency and renewal date.
- Compare the checkout total before you switch. The X Subscription’s published prices name no currency and exclude tax, so check the currency, tax and total against your current charge.
- Pick Premium or higher if you switch from X Premium+ and want to keep ad-free scrolling. The $8 Plus tier only reduces ads. The $30 Premium tier is ad-free on most surfaces.
- Confirm you are willing to give up your X Premium plan for good before you check out. A switch to The X Subscription is permanent, and support can’t undo it.
- Make sure your card can cover the full new price. The refund for unused X Premium time is sent separately, not taken off the checkout amount.
- Check your app store after switching. Cancel a Google Play subscription that still shows as renewing. For Apple purchases, Apple decides the refund.
- Review Auto Top-up and spending caps if you use Grok or Cursor. Usage beyond the weekly allowance is charged to top-up credits.
