Quest 2 and Quest Pro get their last new features by March 2027

Meta is ending feature updates for the Quest 2 and Quest Pro headsets. Your games keep working, but security fixes stop after 2027. Here’s what changes and when.

If there’s a Quest 2 in your cupboard or lounge room, it’s about to stop getting new features. Meta says its final software update for the Quest 2 and Quest Pro will reach every headset by March 2027.

Meta set out the timeline this week in a post for developers. The headsets won’t stop working. But after that final update, new features go only to the Quest 3, Quest 3S and newer devices, including the Meta VR Glasses due next spring.

One last update, then security fixes only

Version 2.13 is the final operating system release for both headsets. Anything Meta adds after it, whether new features, platform tools or developer APIs, will only come to the Quest 3, Quest 3S and newer devices.

After version 2.13, Meta will keep sending security patches and critical bug fixes until the end of 2027. It also says it will stop testing new software releases against the older headsets.

December 2027 is listed as the final security patch. After that, any new flaw found in the headset’s software won’t be fixed.

Your games aren’t going anywhere

This is the part most owners will care about. Apps and games on the Quest 2 and Quest Pro keep working, solo and multiplayer alike.

The Store stays open on both headsets. You keep access to everything you’ve bought, and no apps will be removed from the Store because of this change.

Cross-play also survives. Quest 2 and Quest Pro owners can still play multiplayer games with friends on a Quest 3 or 3S. Playing PC VR games through Link keeps working too.

Developers can keep shipping updates, bug fixes and new content for their existing Quest 2 and Quest Pro games. New apps for the older headsets can be submitted until the end of December 2027. After that, new titles launch only on the newer devices.

When a game drops support

Some developers will eventually move on. Meta’s policy requires them to give customers at least 180 days’ notice before ending support in a way that cuts off content or essential services.

So if a favourite game stops supporting your headset, you should hear about it well ahead of time.

Should you upgrade?

Not in a hurry. A Quest 2 that does what you want today will keep doing it, with security fixes, until the end of 2027.

The decision gets sharper if you’re buying. A second-hand Quest 2 now gets its last feature update by March 2027, and security fixes end with 2027. That’s fine for trying VR, but not for a device you want for years.

It matters more for schools, clinics and businesses that use the headsets for training or demonstrations. Once security fixes stop, a headset is best kept off sensitive networks or replaced, so plan when to do it. It’s the same planning as an ageing Windows PC, which we covered in our guide to Windows 11 versions and when updates stop.

Checklist

  • Install version 2.13, then keep updating. It reaches every Quest 2 and Quest Pro by March 2027 as the last feature update, and security fixes follow until the end of 2027.
  • Watch for notices from your game developers. Meta requires at least 180 days’ notice before a developer ends support in a way that cuts off content or essential services.
  • Think twice about a second-hand Quest 2. Buy one to try VR, not as a headset you plan to use for years.
  • Plan replacements for work headsets. If your school, clinic or business uses Quest 2 or Quest Pro headsets, budget to replace them before security fixes end in late 2027.
