Your PC can say “Windows 11” and still be running a version that no longer gets security fixes. Each Windows 11 version has its own end date, and the date depends on your edition.

This page lists every version Microsoft still supports, when each one stops, and how to check and update a PC. We keep it up to date as Microsoft’s dates change. It’s based on Microsoft’s Windows 11 release information page as it stood on 24 October 2026.

One new version a year, then a countdown

Windows 11 has “an annual feature update cadence”, with each new version released in the second half of the year. The name tells you when it arrived: 25H2 came in the second half of 2025, 26H2 in the second half of 2026.

The countdown starts when a version comes out. Home, Pro, Pro Education and Pro for Workstations get 24 months of updates. Enterprise and Education get 36 months.

While a version is supported, it gets security updates on the second Tuesday of each month. Microsoft’s dates are US dates, so on our reading those updates usually land on the Wednesday in Australia.

The versions still getting updates

Version Available Updates end: Home and Pro Updates end: Enterprise and Education
26H2 29 September 2026 10 October 2028 9 October 2029
26H1 10 February 2026 14 March 2028 13 March 2029
25H2 30 September 2025 12 October 2027 10 October 2028
24H2 1 October 2024 Ended 12 October 2027
23H2 31 October 2023 Ended 10 November 2026

Two things in the table catch people out.

24H2 Home and Pro are already finished. Microsoft says they “have reached end of updates” on 13 October 2026, and the October security update was their last. We covered that in Windows 11 24H2 Home and Pro have had their last security update.

26H1 isn’t for your current PC. It’s for new devices that started coming to market in early 2026. It “is not offered as an in-place update” from 24H2 or 25H2. If you’re on one of those, 26H2 is your next step.

23H2 in the office: the next deadline

If your business runs Windows 11 Enterprise or Education on 23H2, its updates end on 10 November 2026. Microsoft says the November 2026 security update will be the last one. Home and Pro on 23H2 stopped getting updates in November 2025.

What “end of updates” means

After its end date, a PC “will no longer receive monthly security and non-security preview updates containing protections from the latest security threats”. The fix is to move to a supported version through Windows Update.

How to check which version you’re on

Right-click Start, choose Settings, then System, then About. Under Windows specifications you’ll see your edition (such as Windows 11 Pro) and your version (such as 25H2).

There’s a shortcut too. Press the Windows key and R together, type winver and press Enter. A small window shows the build number. Builds starting with 26300 are 26H2, 26200 is 25H2, 26100 is 24H2 and 22631 is 23H2.

In an office, check every machine. PCs bought or set up at different times often end up on different versions.

How to move to a newer version

Open Settings, then Windows Update, and select Check for Windows updates. If a newer version is offered, choose Download & install, then restart when asked. Microsoft says that if the latest version isn’t offered, you can get it through the Windows Update Assistant.

On 24H2 or 25H2, the move to 26H2 is quick. It uses the same technology as monthly updates: a small download and one restart.

Don’t be surprised if 26H2 isn’t offered yet. Microsoft is rolling it out gradually. It went first to 24H2 and 25H2 PCs with Get the latest updates as soon as they’re available turned on in Windows Update. In late September, Microsoft said it would expand “over the next few months”. Our 26H2 rollout checklist covers testing office PCs before you update them all.

That toggle only changes how fast non-security and feature updates arrive. Security updates come either way.

Still on Windows 10?

Windows 10 support ended on 14 October 2025. Those PCs keep working, but get no security fixes, feature updates or technical help, and are more vulnerable.

Home users can buy time through Extended Security Updates. Coverage runs until 12 October 2027, for up to 10 devices on one Microsoft account. Microsoft Australia lists three ways in: free if you sync your PC settings, 1,000 Microsoft Rewards points, or a one-time A$44.95. Enrol under Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update. The PC must be on Windows 10 22H2 with the latest updates. This home version isn’t available on PCs managed by a workplace IT system.

Businesses pay per device: US$61 for the first year, with the price doubling each year, for up to three years. It’s security updates only.

Checklist

  • Check every PC’s version. Go to Settings > System > About and note the edition and version under Windows specifications.
  • Move any 24H2 Home or Pro PC now. Its updates ended on 13 October 2026; use Settings > Windows Update to move to 25H2 or 26H2.
  • Plan Enterprise and Education 23H2 machines. Their updates end on 10 November 2026; move them before that date.
  • Test one PC before updating the rest. Update a single office PC to 26H2 and check your business apps and printers before rolling it out.
  • Diary the next end date. 25H2 Home and Pro stop getting updates on 12 October 2027.
  • Sort out any Windows 10 PCs. Upgrade them, replace them, or enrol them in Extended Security Updates, which run until 12 October 2027 for home users.
